VARAMIENTOS EN ALMERÍA. RELATO BREVE.

Domingo, día 28 de septiembre de 2.003:
Se presentaba soleado y con viento de poniente, un buena mañana para ir al cine con la familia.
A las 11'30 horas, un pesquero de Adra avisa que trae una Tortuga boba (Caretta caretta) con un anzuelo de palangre, al llegar a puerto se le está esperando y se recoge al animal, un ejemplar de 50 cm de longitud de caparazón y 15'60 kg de peso. A continuación se llevó al veterinario para que le realizara una placa de rayos X y una analítica de sangre (como siempre se hace en el caso de ejemplares de tortugas marinas vivas). Pero el trabajo no acabó aquí porque anteriormente, sobre las 13 horas, EMERGENCIAS 112, nos dio aviso de un nuevo varamiento en las costas del Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata. Un pequeño (97 cm) delfín listado (Stenella coeruleoalba) había llegado en estado de cansancio extremo hasta las someras aguas de la playa de Genoveses.
Rápidamente los efectivos de PROMAR (Programa de Recuperación de Fauna Marina de Almería) se pusieron en marcha, y en menos de una hora comenzamos a llegar a la playa desde todos los puntos de la provincia.
Today we had a new stranding in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. It was over 13 o´clock in the morning when we received an alert of a small (very small) dolphin that had arrived in a very tired state to the shallow waters of Genoveses Beach.. Quickly PROMAR team raised in guns, and in less than an hour we began to arrive to the beach from every point of Almería province.
La sorpresa fue de que al llegar al lugar, nos encontramos con que personas ajenas a nuestra organización habían decidido (pensando que era lo correcto) liberar al animal mar adentro.
En este momento es cuando decidimos reforzar la vigilancia, pues somos conscientes de que un animal tan pequeño, sólo y que busca la playa, no está en condiciones de volver a mar profundo.
Surprise arrived when we came up to the place, when we were informed that some persons out of our organization had decided (thinking it was the best) to release the animal 100 mtrs inside to the Blue. In this moment we take the decission of reinforcing vigilance, because we are aware that so a little animal, alone in the wild and looking for the beach, is not in condition of coming back to deep sea..
El mar estaba muy agitado, con fuerte viento de Poniente en la parte exterior de la bahía, y comenzamos la búsqueda, sabiendo que antes o después aparecería nuevamente. Prismáticos en ristre, nos desplegamos por las playas adyacentes, e incluso tuvimos la ocasión de contar con una embarcación que se prestó voluntariamente a ayudarnos (desde aquí nuestro agradecimiento a estas buenas gentes).
Water was very rough, with West Wind in the outside of the bay, and we began our search., conscious that the animal would come soon or late again to the beach. Binoculars in hand, we spread through adjacent beaches, and even we took a ship, of a people there that offered their unselfish help to look for the animal (thanks to them from here).
Cuando la incertidumbre hacía mella en nuestro pensamiento, recibimos una llamada en la playa, a eso de las 4 de la tarde, con un aviso de que un delfín pequeño había varado en la playa de Mónsul (muy cercana a la de Genoveses); no cabía la menor duda, nuestro delfín había ido nadando contra la corriente hasta llegar a dicha playa, donde fue volteado por las olas contra las rocas y recogido y resguardado en un pequeño rincón protegido por grandes rocas donde escasamente había un fondo de no más de medio metro de agua.
When uncertainty hitted our minds, we received a call there in the beach, towards 4 o´clock in the afternoon, about a small dolphin that has been stranded in Mónsul Beach (very near to Genoveses Beach, where we were in that moment); there was no doubt, our baby-dolphin has been swimming in the contrary side of marine currents till she arrived to this beach, where she was turned over by the big waves to a reduced place where scarcely there was a depth of only half a meter of water.
Allí fue donde le encontramos, y donde tomamos todas las medidas necesarias para salvar su vida; tras aproximadamente una hora, llegó al lugar el equipo veterinario de PROMAR, y comenzaron así a tomarse decisiones. Un animal tan pequeño (menos de un metro, y aun sin dientes) no sobreviviría si lo devolvíamos al mar; tras complicadas meditaciones, se decidió sedar al animal y transportarle al centro de recuperación del que PROMAR dispone, pero el cansancio del animal, debido a la natación contra corriente, así como su débil estado físico, por las horas pasadas sin ingerir alimento materno, así como por los golpes recibidos contra las rocas, hicieron que sucumbiera en el intento.
There we met her at last, and there we took every decission to ensure her security; after a hour, there arrived to the place our vet equipment, far from Almería City and new decissions took place. So a small animal(less than one meter, and with no teeth) would not survive if we put her again to the sea; after complex explanations of our technic equipment, it was decided definitely to transport her to the Recovery Center that PROMAR have at our disposal, but animal´s tiredness, after swimming through the currents, so as the hits given with the rocks, and her general weak state, because of time far from her mother´s food (remember that she had no teeth yet), made her die when we tried our only solution.
Es difícil describir la frustración que surge en la playa cuando un animal se va, tras tanto esfuerzo humano invertido.
It becomes difficoult to explain how hard is to be in the beach when an animal goes out, after so much human effort.
Su cuerpo valdrá ahora, tras la necropsia correspondiente, para ayudar a desvelar más secretos sobre la vida marina, que sigan dando luz sobre las causas de varamientos de estos animales y así podremos mejorar la ayuda que le prestamos.
Now,at least, her body would be useful, after necropsy, to help knowing more about marine life secrets, that can be of interest in new strandings of marine mammals.
Nuestro más sincero agradecimiento a aquellas personas que han colaborado de forma voluntaria y con todas sus fuerzas.

PD. Recordar sólo que si encontráis un cetáceo o tortuga marina varado en la playa, no debéis dejarle marchar, sino mantenerle en posición de natación, con su espiráculo (agujero superior por donde respira) hacia arriba, mirando hacia el mar e intentando que se quede allí, hasta que lleguen los equipos de PROMAR. El animal se agobia por la presencia de muchas personas junto a él, hay que evitar que la gente se aglomere a su alrededor (sólo deben estar una o dos personas, justo las necesarias para sostener al animal) se pondrá muy nervioso e intentará huir, y varará nuevamente en un sitio donde quizás no pueda ser hallado, y su estado físico se agravará.
Note: Please remember everybody that if you find a stranded marine mammal or marine turtle on the beach, you must not let him to go out, but put him in swimming position with the spiracle (breething hole) in the upper position and looking towards the sea to prevent stress to the animal, and trying to retain him in the place. Fone the 112 phone number and very soon PROMAR people will be there to help you.. If you release the animal, this will flee frightened for people proximity, and will be stranded again in other place, possibly in a hidden cove or of more difficoult access, and he will be never seen again or he will be found more deteriorated, like in this case.
